About this work
It comes as no surprise that Henk Helmantel often paints onions. The bulbous onion is perfectly suited for playing with light and shadow. Multiple layers create subtle transitions, and the matte and glossy areas are rich in nuances for the painter to work with. Add to this the fact that Henk wants to show the viewer how beautiful the ordinary is, and the onions become a perfectly logical element in his works.
