Aryballos

Debora Makkus has been counted among the ‘Masters of Realism’ for many years: a selection of distinguished realist artists. Her works have featured in more than 45 museum exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. Her work has a strong identity of its own. Following her beautiful series Roman I-X, her exploration of Roman glass in paint continues. An aryballos was a small bottle containing soap, used in Roman bathhouses. Before the glass revolution, these vessels were made of earthenware. In excavated Roman bathhouses, warnings can still be found urging visitors to handle the glassware carefully and not to drop it. This aryballos dates from the 2nd/3rd century and comes from the northern part of the Roman Empire (the Netherlands/Germany).
